📖 Passage 원문
❶ To see how borrowing and lending changes a person’s worldview, consider what the rate of interest does to people’s perception of time.

❷ Imagine you are lending to somebody at an interest rate of 10 percent per year for five years.

❸ This rate tells us that the money lent has a cost that reflects the risk of you not being repaid and the opportunity cost of not spending that money yourself.

❹ The longer the term of the loan, the higher the chance you won’t be paid back because it is further into the future — which by definition is unknowable — and the longer you will have to wait before spending the money yourself.

❺ In order to make this worthwhile for the lender, money has to have a price — a cost to the borrower and income to the lender.

❻ This price factors in the value of time.

❼ To put it another way, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

SECTION A 정밀 문장 해석 (Precision Translation)

O / X
“This rate tells us that the money lent has a cost that reflects the risk of you not being repaid and the opportunity cost of not spending that money yourself.”
O / X
“The longer the term of the loan, the higher the chance you won’t be paid back because it is further into the future — which by definition is unknowable — and the longer you will have to wait before spending the money yourself.”

(Grammar Verification)

O / X
This rate tells us that the money lent has a cost [which] reflects the risk of you not being repaid and the opportunity cost of not spending that money yourself.
O / X
“In order to make this worthwhile for the lender, money has to have a price — a cost to the borrower and income to the lender.”
It is in order to make this worthwhile for the lender [that] money has to have a price — a cost to the borrower and income to the lender.

(Contextual Function)

O / X
“To put it another way, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.”에서 “a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush”는 대출과 이자의 맥락에서 알 수 없는 미래의 돈보다 현재 수중에 있는 돈의 가치가 더 크다는 시간의 가치를 비유적으로 나타낸다.
O / X
“Imagine you are lending to somebody at an interest rate of 10 percent per year for five years.”는 앞 문장(“To see how borrowing and lending changes a person’s worldview, consider what the rate of interest does to people’s perception of time.”)의 주장을 반박하기 위한 예외 사례를 제시하며, 뒤 문장(“This rate tells us that the money lent has a cost that reflects the risk of you not being repaid and the opportunity cost of not spending that money yourself.”)

(Logical Inference)

O / X
“The longer the term of the loan, the higher the chance you won’t be paid back because it is further into the future — which by definition is unknowable — and the longer you will have to wait before spending the money yourself.”와 “In order to make this worthwhile for the lender, money has to have a price — a cost to the borrower and income to the lender.”
이 판단은 “The longer the term of the loan, the higher the chance you won’t be paid back because it is further into the future — which by definition is unknowable — and the longer you will have to wait before spending the money yourself.”와 “This price factors in the value of time.”
Interest rates reflect the value of time by pricing repayment risk and delayed spending.

(Summary Completion)

근거(지문 문장 번호): ❸ 오류 분석: 원문은 빌려준 돈에 상환받지 못할 위험(the risk of you not being repaid)과 그 돈을 직접 쓰지 못하는 기회비용(the opportunity cost of not spending that money yourself)을 반영하는 비용이 있다는 점(has a cost that reflects ...)
근거(지문 문장 번호): ❹ 오류 분석: 원문은 대출 기간이 길수록 정의상 알 수 없는(unknowable) 더 먼 미래의 일이 되기 때문에 돈을 돌려받지 못할 가능성이 더 높아진다(the higher the chance you won’t be paid back)고 말한다.
In order to make this worthwhile for the lender를 It is ~ that ... 대괄호 안의 [that]은 강조된 부사구 뒤에서 완전한 절 money has to have a price — a cost to the borrower and income to the lender를 이끄는 강조 구문 표지로 어법상 적절하며, 대여자에게 이 일이 가치가 있게 하려면 돈에 가격(차입자의 비용이자 대여자의 수입)이 있어야 한다는 원문의 의미와 논리 관계도 그대로 보존된다.
To put it another way, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush(다시 말해, 손 안의 새 한 마리가 수풀 속의 새 두 마리보다 가치 있다)는 불확실한 미래의 돈보다 현재 손에 쥐고 있는 돈의 가치가 더 높다는 시간 가치를 비유적으로 재진술한 표현이다.
(The longer the term of the loan, the higher the chance you won’t be paid back ... and the longer you will have to wait ...) (This price factors in the value of time.)
(A) so / (B) valuable
When money is lent into an unknowable future, the lender faces both repayment risk and delayed personal use, so money must carry a price that factors in time and shows that present money is more valuable than money promised later. 빈칸 (B) 근거: ❻과 ❼은 돈의 가격이 시간의 가치를 감안하며, 손 안의 새 한 마리가 수풀 속의 새 두 마리보다 가치 있다(a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush)고 비유하여 현재 가진 돈이 미래에 약속된 돈보다 가치가 더 높음을 나타낸다. is more ___ than money promised later의 주격보어 형용사 자리에는 valuable, uncertain, abundant, optional이 모두 문법적으로 들어갈 수 있으나, 현재의 돈이 미래의 돈보다 더 가치 있다는 문맥에 부합하는 것은 valuable뿐이다. 보기의 품사와 뜻: so (접속사): 그래서, 따라서 whereas (접속사): 반면에 unless (접속사): ~하지 않는 한 although (접속사): 비록 ~이지만 valuable (형용사): 가치 있는 uncertain (형용사): 불확실한 abundant (형용사): 풍부한 optional (형용사): 선택적인 오답 보기 배제 근거: whereas: When money is lent into an unknowable future, the lender faces both repayment risk and delayed personal use, whereas money must carry a price that factors in time and shows that present money is more valuable than money promised later. (미상환 위험 및 사용 지연과 돈에 가격이 매겨져야 하는 필요성을 단순 대조 관계로 놓아, 위험과 대기 시간 때문에 돈에 가격이 있어야 한다는 ❸–❺의 인과 논리를 살리지 못한다.) unless: When money is lent into an unknowable future, the lender faces both repayment risk and delayed personal use, unless money must carry a price that factors in time and shows that present money is more valuable than money promised later. (돈에 가격이 매겨지지 않는 한 대여자가 미상환 위험과 지연을 겪는다는 뜻이 되어, 돈에 가격(이자)이 있는 대출에서도 그 이자율이 위험과 기회비용을 반영한다는 ❸–❺의 설명과 어긋난다.) although: When money is lent into an unknowable future, the lender faces both repayment risk and delayed personal use, although money must carry a price that factors in time and shows that present money is more valuable than money promised later. (돈에 가격이 있어야 함에도 불구하고 대여자가 위험과 지연을 겪는다는 양보 관계가 되어, 위험과 지연이 있기 때문에 대여를 가치 있게 만들려고 돈에 가격을 매긴다는 ❹–❺의 목적·인과 관계와 맞지 않는다.) uncertain: When money is lent into an unknowable future, the lender faces both repayment risk and delayed personal use, so money must carry a price that factors in time and shows that present money is more uncertain than money promised later. (현재의 돈이 나중에 약속된 돈보다 더 ‘불확실하다’는 뜻이 되어, 정의상 알 수 없는(unknowable) 것은 미래라고 한 ❹와 정반대가 된다.) abundant: When money is lent into an unknowable future, the lender faces both repayment risk and delayed personal use, so money must carry a price that factors in time and shows that present money is more abundant than money promised later. (현재의 돈이 미래의 돈보다 양적으로 더 ‘풍부하다’는 뜻이 되어, 시간의 가치(the value of time)와 현재 보유 가치의 우위를 설명하는 ❻–❼의 논지와 무관하다.) optional: When money is lent into an unknowable future, the lender faces both repayment risk and delayed personal use, so money must carry a price that factors in time and shows that present money is more optional than money promised later.
