Passage
Events or experiences that are out of ordinary tend to be remembered better because there is nothing competing with them when your brain tries to access them from its storehouse of remembered events. In other words, the reason it can be difficult to remember what you ate for breakfast two Thursdays ago is that there was probably nothing special about that Thursday or that particular breakfast ― consequently, all your breakfast memories combine together into a sort of generic impression of a breakfast. Your memory merges similar events not only because it’s more efficient to do so, but also because this is fundamental to how we learn things ― our brains extract abstract rules that tie experiences together. This is especially true for things that are routine. If your breakfast is always the same ― cereal with milk, a glass of orange juice, and a cup of coffee for instance ― there is no easy way for your brain to extract the details from one particular breakfast. Ironically, then, for behaviors that are routinized, you can remember the generic content of the behavior (such as the things you ate, since you always eat the same thing), but particulars to that one instance can be very difficult to call up (such as the sound of a garbage truck going by or a bird that passed by your window) unless they were especially distinctive. On the other hand, if you did something unique that broke your routine― perhaps you had leftover pizza for breakfast and spilled tomato sauce on your dress shirt ― you are more likely to remember it.

(A) competition, (B) merge
(A) competition, (B) merge
출제 근거 지문 문장 ❶ "because there is nothing competing with them when your brain tries to access them" 및 문장 ❸ "Your memory merges similar events not only because it’s more efficient to do so..."
(A) efficient, (B) abstract
(A) efficient, (B) abstract
출제 근거 지문 문장 ❸ "not only because it’s more efficient to do so, but also because this is fundamental to how we learn things ― our brains extract abstract rules that tie experiences together."
빈칸 (A)는 be동사 is 뒤의 보어 형용사 efficient이며, (B)는 명사 rules를 수식하는 형용사 abstract이다.
(A) generic, (B) particulars
(A) generic, (B) particulars
출제 근거 지문 문장 ❻ "you can remember the generic content of the behavior... but particulars to that one instance can be very difficult to call up... unless they were especially distinctive."
모범 답안 there is nothing competing with them
복수 인정 there is nothing competing with them
출제 근거 지문 문장 ❶ "because there is nothing competing with them when your brain tries to access them"에서 이유를 나타내는 핵심 접속사절의 주어-동사-수식어구 구조를 그대로 선별한 것이다.
모범 답안 our brains extract abstract rules
복수 인정 our brains extract abstract rules
출제 근거 지문 문장 ❸ "our brains extract abstract rules that tie experiences together"에서 주어-동사-목적어로 이루어진 핵심 구문을 선별하여 배열한 것이다.
모범 답안 doing something unique that broke your routine
복수 인정 doing something unique that broke your routine
출제 근거 지문 문장 ❼ "if you did something unique that broke your routine"을 바탕으로, 전치사 by의 목적어로 쓰이기 위해 동사 do를 동명사 doing으로 어형 변형하고 관계사절 내 동사 broke를 과거형으로 일치시킨 구문이다.
Unique events are remembered better, while routine experiences merge into generic impressions.
복수 인정 - While routine events are merged together, unique experiences are remembered much better.
출제 근거 지문 문장 ❶ "Events or experiences that are out of ordinary tend to be remembered better" 및 문장 ❷~❸ "all your breakfast memories combine together into a sort of generic impression...
The brain merges similar events because it is efficient and helps extract abstract rules.
복수 인정 - Our brain merges similar events because it is efficient and fundamental to extracting abstract rules.
출제 근거 지문 문장 ❸ "Your memory merges similar events not only because it’s more efficient to do so, but also because this is fundamental to how we learn things ― our brains extract abstract rules that tie experiences together."
